Product Description
In 1761, at the outset of the industrial revolution, Thomas Dakin began distilling gin in Warrington, at the age of 25. He pioneered the development and refinement of high quality English gin and his inventive and enlightened outlook created a superior quality, unrivalled gin distilling heritage and legacy. Given gin’s sordid reputation at the time, this was a highly ambitious move but Dakin had the courage of his convictions to succeed and transform the fortunes of gin from its dark past into a glorious future. Many gin makers followed Thomas Dakin but he was the man that started it all and is widely regarded as the forefather of quality English gin. Thomas Dakin’s family were also pioneers and his son Edward, with his wife Margaret, took over the business from Thomas. Edward was a founding member of The Amicable Society, a dining and drinking club founded in 1788. It was at The Amicable Society where the Dakins first met the Greenall family and discussed gin making and business. This meeting would pave the way for a change in ownership of the business and it was in 1860 that Edward Greenall leased the distillery from the Dakin family and eventually purchased it in 1870. He would name the new business after his younger brother Gilbert and John; thus creating G&J Greenall, a name synonymous with quality gin for generations. The Greenall family had established a brewing business in 1762, a year after Thomas Dakin distilled his first gin. By the time of the purchase, some hundred years later, the Greenall family had established an impressive distribution network for their beer, which would help Thomas Dakin’s gin thrive. The Greenalls remained true to his original recipe and the family moved on to create one of the world’s largest gin producers.
Soft red cole, with hints of ripe grapefruit rind and coriander coming through. Sharp upon the palate, with a growing dry spice of liquorice and coriander. Fresh kicks of the grapefruit appear, alongside savoury notes of the juniper and the warmth of the red cole to give a long, bold finish. A fantastic savoury styled gin.
