Donella Follador conceived the idea that led to the establishment of the Valdobbiadene DOCG Terre di Sant’Alberto. Terre di Sant’Alberto refers to the hills in the heart of Valdobbiadene, attractive but steep hillslopes worked exclusively manually. The wines are the fruit of long traditions and of expertise that succeeds in yielding the finest-quality expression of this unique terroir. Donella, whose family boasts ancient roots in the Valdobbiadene winegrowing tradition, owns and cultivates 10 hectares of vineyard and a small parcel of Cartizze. Unfailingly aware of and sensitive to the need to protect the environment, she lives out in the rural area, with her animals all around her, where she dedicates her efforts to growing medicinal herbs and to re-discovering the ancient local recipes for vini medicati (medicated wines), known also enoliti (tinctures) or elixirs. There once was a stone in the church with the Quadrato del Sator carved into it. Quadrato del Sator is also referred to as a Quadrato Magico, or magic square, because it can be read in all directions, from left to right, from right to left, from up to down, and vice versa, and by changing the direction of the reading every other line as well. The Quadrato del Sator has very ancient origins, and is found in numerous places, including among the ruins of Pompeii and in the Roman ruins in Cirencester, England; it can be seen in many churches scattered throughout Europe, from France to Hungary. Its meaning remain puzzling, even though the most common interpretation sees it as pre-Christian, since the word Tenet forms a cross within the square. In this sense some thinkers suggested the interpretation: “God, who created all the things, preserves with care his works”.
